Base on a phone

What the phone layout shows, and what is better done at a desk.

Base on a phone

What it is

The same Base, laid out for a 6-inch screen. The three permanent desktop columns (nav, page, chat) become a top bar, a bottom tab bar and a slide-out nav drawer. The phone layout is built for site: one job, many things to do on it. The office jobs (pricing a tender, reconciling Xero) still work, but they are better at a desk.

Before you start

  • Nothing. Open the same web address on your phone and sign in. The layout switches by screen width; a tablet gets the top bar and the drawer but keeps the desktop page layout.
  • The Site tab needs the Timesheets module (the site home reads roll-call and shift data). Without it the tab takes you to the job's diary instead.

How to

Get around outside a job

The bottom bar has Projects, Tasks, Ask Base and More, plus Site when the Timesheets module is on. Site forwards a supervisor on one live job straight to its site home, or lists the jobs. More opens the nav drawer.

Use the nav drawer

  1. Press More (bottom bar) or the menu icon (top bar).
  2. The drawer is the real nav, shortened. It leads with the screens worth opening standing up: Projects, Comms, Tasks, Dashboard, Documents, Forms, Tickets, Timesheets, Crew, Contacts, CRM and Teams, with the same gating and counts as the desktop.
  3. Press Everything else at the foot to see the full nav.

The drawer closes itself when you land on a page.

Work inside a job

Open a job and the bottom bar changes to that job's own screens: Overview, Site (or Diary without the Timesheets module), Docs and Ask Base. The top bar shows the job's name and number, a back arrow to All projects, the notification bell and an Ask Base button. The menu icon in the top bar opens the drawer, which is now that job's full section list.

Ask Base from a phone

Press Ask Base on the bottom bar or in the top bar. The chat opens over the page. Dictation, photo attachments and the camera roll work as on a desktop; dropping a ticket photo in chat files it.

Check notifications

Press the bell in the top bar. A dot means unread.

What happens on its own

  • The phone's Tasks opens the list view; the portfolio timeline is not offered on a phone because it does not fit.
  • The Site tab and the Site bottom-bar entry appear and disappear with the Timesheets module.
  • Workspaces still apply inside the drawer: the five fixed rows and the current workspace's pages are what you see first.

Things that surprise people

  • The drawer is not a cut-down copy of the nav; it is the nav, filtered. If a page is missing, it is either behind Everything else or switched off by your admin.
  • Inside a job the More tab disappears. Use the menu icon in the top bar to reach the other sections.
  • The dashboard is in the drawer but not on the bottom bar. On a phone the front door is Projects.
  • Estimating, the rate book, the programme and the finance screens all open on a phone, but they are wide, dense screens built for a monitor. Review a figure on site; do the work at a desk.
  • A 2D plan viewer on a phone pans with one finger and zooms with a pinch, the same as every other 2D surface in Base.
